A few weeks ago I decided to leverage the power of my linkedin network, and conduct a small survey regarding Twitter. The findings were truly fascinating.
Firstly, we have to take into consideration the individuals polled have also been pre-qualified with an affinity for Social Networks considering it was conducted via Linkedin You’ll notice in the graph below illustrates that those who took the survey were largely in the 25-34 age group. However that’s not the what’s intriguing to me.
1. 50% of the those who fall into the 35-54 age group state that they are Twitter ADDICTS!
This seems to be in line with recent data collected and shared via a Harvard study. Twitter tends to skew older, there is a strong 90/10 rule, and men tend to follow other men. While younger users may have an account and Tweet from time to time, it’s the older crowd that are truly engaging and experiencing the power of Twitter. Cool
2. While 20% consider themselves Twitter ADDICTS, a whopping 30% opted for a “Twitter Who?” response.
No Grey area to be seen. It’s either you love Twitter, or well..you don’t. I’m not totally surprised by the results. However, what I do find alarming is that this particular sample (I thought) would have skewed more toward the “Twitter Addict” group. Considering that my linkedin network should be technology saavy individuals who are enaged with new media. I mean, they have linkedin profiles after all?
It seems Twitter really is being used by only a small portion of its users (based on this survey anyway).
3. Harvard was right: again.
The curve ball regarding my mini survey is that those who answered “Twitter Addict” tend to be the most influential in ANY group. You’ll notice that there’s a combined 50% that are both on Twitter = “Have an Account, rarely use” and “Only for work related tweets”….what does this tell us? The 80/20 rule may be more like a 90/10 rule on Twitter and that Twitter is still in it’s infancy.
Personally I think that’s the most exciting part regarding Twitter; like Al Pacino said in “Scent of a Woman” ...”I’m just gettin’ started”!
Let me know what you think? Statistically relevant? Appropriate sample size? Find me on Twitter and let me know! @cdessi I fall heavily into the Green Twitter Addict zone; so I’ll most likely reply to your Tweet within 30 seconds.
Seriously
