My fourth gift came as a surprise. I’d actually purchased something that I was prepared to label as gift number four when the opportunity to “give” presented itself…so I went for it.
On the way home from work on the subway I was able to help someone out. A woman got on the subway car with grocery bags. She shuffled into place behind me wedged between me and what seemed like 10,000 other people smushed into the subway car. Nothing out of the normal mass of humanity that fills the subway cars on a Friday evening rush. When we pulled out the station it became apparent that the woman had nothing to hold onto (it was that crowded) because she instinctively reached for something to hold onto …me. It was funny, and she was obviously embarrassed that she’s grabbed my side. I turned around as she was apologizing and said – “no worries, it’s better than falling over” she smiled, I smiled. It was pretty cool.
