Mark Zuckerberg Should Step Down As CEO of Facebook, Watch Me Explain Why With Ben Parr of CNET on CNBC

I was honored today to be included in a fascinating debate on CNBC to answer the question, “Is Mark Zuckerberg In Over His Hoodie?”, facing off against Ben Parr of CNET.

It was a thrill to be on with Ben.  I’ve followed his career at Mashable closely and was truly honored to have such a fun debate with him today. He was gracious and made some great points.

My contention was, and will remain Mark Zuckerberg is a visionary, but is currently not meeting his fiduciary responsibility to his shareholders. As a CEO of a newly public company, he has to spend more time on outward-facing issues dealing with investors, analysts and journalists, and generally being accountable to their shareholders.

While I love the platform, and spend a great deal of time and money on Facebook for both personal use and on behalf of my amazing clients. As a stockholder, I would prefer to see Sheryl Sandberg at the helm.

Take a look, and let me know what you think?

Silverback Social Says; “The Next Big Thing is Thinglink”

Thinglink is still relatively obscure and new, but the Silverback Social team believes now is the perfect time to adopt this new form of social media for several reasons:Westchester Digital Summit Thinglink

Although new, Thinglink has been in development for a while and it is now quite polished. Easy image sharing amongst all the major social networking platforms. As a company trying to grow its brand, presenting unique and eye-catching content (like an interactive image!) will help make the company memorable.

Here’s what it does:

  • Make images interactive. You can add widgets and icons onto an image that display a wealth of information, unobtrusively; including other images,
  • “pop-up” videos, and polls (see below link for an example).
  • Can also use animated gifs.
  • Has on-site functionality similar to that of Pinterest.
  • Set up a Thinglink app on your Facebook
  • Reuse the same images.
  • Track stats of each image, including # of image views.

Click this link to see an example we’ve done for the Westchester Digital Summit:

That image can be viewed in a Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest post without forcing the user to leave the site, thus, creating a positive viewing experience. As you can see, even videos play within the image.

We can use this platform to really enhance advertisements. We can turn, what was, a static ad into a dynamic, engaging piece of content that can educate users on a new product, contain a call-to-action to buy a product, and even provide relevant consumer opinions on an advertised product. The possibilities are limited only by your creativity.

College Students: Four Easy Steps to Clean Up Your Facebook Page Before the Big Interview

I’m usually pretty liberal with the conent that I allow on Facebook – this is mostly because I’m a 37 year old married father of two, not a 21 year old about to graduate from College. The most scandelous photos that I’m tagged in usually involved baby vomit,  not me vomiting at a frat party.  However, when a photo popped up of my brother and I after having thrown back a few at a Villanova homecoming weekend (circa 1993?) It dawned on me that some photos that upcoming College graduates have on their current Facebook pages may not be as appropriate as others, and perhaps it was worth taking a closer look. So I started to poke around and found something really refreshing:  Facebook is making it easier for us to curate our content.  In this instance “curating” is just nice way of saying – delete all of the pics you don’t want your future boss to see.   Phew! Here are three easy steps to help you curate away:

1. Visit Your Activity Log to See Photos Your Tagged In

2. Click Around Your Activity Log – to see photos you’re tagged in

3.  Use “Shared with” and “On Timeline” Filters to See Things You’ve Hidden From Your Timeline

 4.  Spot Something You Don’t Like? DELETE IT!

Please share this with ANYONE seeking employment and who is concerned about years of bad behavior popping up pre-interview.  I’ll leave you with this little gem of a statistic -

51% of recruiters search candidates online to determine whether they will fit with the company culture (source: Qnary).

So if you think they’re not checking out all of those pics from High School and College BEFORE you even step foot into the interview, you’re sorely mistaken.  Curate away! Happy Holidays.
